A closer look

When the plan was hatched to construct the great cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in 1293, there was no plan to actually build the dome – the technology simply didn't exist...

Construction progressed over decades and still no plan. Cue public crisis and an open competition where a goldsmith hatched his own scheme to convince the judges – an egg, or half of one to be precise. Fillipo Brunelleschi had gazed south and looked to Rome for his inspiration, finding it in what many consider to be ancient Rome's second wonder of the world...the Pantheon. Incredibly the strategy of an egg from a man with no architectural experience triumphed, and works on the great dome finally began in 1420.

Our climb of 'Cupola' presents Tours & Tours guests with the opportunity not only to live and breathe this fascinating history, but also to enjoy a unique a bird’s-eye view of this majestic Renaissance city.

This unforgettable experience will be followed by a leisurely walking tour, accompanied by our passionate guides, recounting everything from the history of the picturesque streets, to the story of famous Florentine families such as the Medici - Godfathers of the Renaissance - whose political influence, championing of the arts and general mystique permeate the city and enchant a new generation of admirers through the hit Netflix television series.

Tour highlights include the historic Church of Orsanmichele, constructed in 1337 over a 9th century monastery. Originally purposed as a grain market, it was converted into a church between 1380 and 1404 and its legacy secured once it became a chapel used by the powerful Florence craft and trade guilds. The city's connection with the masters continues as we move on to the Basilica of Santa Croce, the resting place of Florence's greatest sons, including Michelangelo and Galileo. Dating back to 1294, the Basilica still stands today as the largest Franciscan church in the world, boasting no less than sixteen chapels, many of which house frescos by Giotto.

We conclude with a stroll over the Ponte Vecchio. This ancient bridge, straddling the river Arno, was rebuilt following a flood in 1345 and was renowned for the shops and merchants that populated its flanks. Today, the bridge is an instantly recognizable picture-postcard, still famous for its jewelry stores and spectacular views and less well known as the sole Florentine bridge unscathed by World War II.
