Duomo & Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
Located in the center of the historical city of Florence, the Dome, or Duomo, is visible from afar and surrounded by medieval buildings. The dome is accessible from the beautiful cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, and was built from 1418 to 1434 by Filippo Brunelleschi.
The Uffizi Gallery
Possibly one of the best, most renowned art galleries in the world, the Uffizi is famous for The Birth of Venus - Sandro Botticelli, Woman with a Veil – Raphael and Tondo Doni – Michelangelo amongst many others. Built by Giorgio Vasari between 1560 and 1581 the Uffizi Gallery has 50 rooms containing paintings from the 13th to 18th century.
The Accademia Gallery
One absolutely not to miss if you’re visiting Florence, is the Galleria dell'Accademia, home to the famous Statue of David by Michelangelo, and many other sculptures including his Prisoners or Slaves, and St. Matthew. It’s also worth paying a visit to the most recent section, the museum of the musical instruments, hosting a selection of around 50 instruments belonging to the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory.
Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge)
This beautiful old bride was the only bridge to cross the river Arno until 1218, and the bridge that stands today was rebuilt after a flood in 1345. Since the 13th century Ponte Vecchio has been home to shops, and is now famous for its jewelry shops and fantastic view of the river and city.
Giotto’s Bell Tower
This is the tower of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, of typically gothic architecture and built between 1334 and 1359. The tower stands tall in the centre of Florence and most beautifully decorated with detailed sculptures on the outside. The tower is almost 85m with 414 steps, but don’t let you put you off as the panoramic view of the city is well worth the climb.
