A closer look

The birth of Christianity coincided on the great timeline of history with the most glorious years of Rome: the first ever emperor, Augustus, reigned precisely when Jesus Christ was born; biblical Jerusalem is under the iron grip of Roman rule as they expand across the known world; and as the empire reached the peak of its glory around the second century CE, the new religion was spreading like wildfire across Europe.

And so it was that Christians across the Roman empire were persecuted, brutally and mercilessly; and many martyrs began to write history with their blood before the empire finally converted in 380 CE amid the early days of what would be its eventual decline.

But the name of this tour is not just Catacombs, it’s Underground Rome too, and that’s because so much of this ancient city is built on top of itself. We’ll also discover the Basilica of San Clemente and that of San Giovanni e Paolo in the charming Celio district just under the Colosseum, both once upon a time forgotten by history.
