What to wear

The Vatican Museums are home to many wonders, but are also home to strict religious traditions, therefore, here are some tips as to what you should wear… or rather… what NOT to wear.

The main thing to remember is that your shoulders and knees MUST be covered, so the following items of clothing are forbidden, and you may be refused entry if wearing any of the following items.

- Shorts above the knees

- Sleeveless shirts

- Mini-skirts

- Low cut clothing

- Hats

Book in advance

Turning up on the spur of the moment to visit the Vatican Museums may seem like a good idea, until you reach the never ending queue… so this option should be a NO. Booking in advance can save you hours of time wasted, so you can really appreciate the beauties inside without having to worry about how long it’ll take you to get into the place.

Tours & Tours are delighted to be able to offer tours of the Vatican Museums, so why not treat your self and allow us take care of all of this for you.

The crowds

Even though you may beat those crowds when you skip-the-line, don’t forget that millions visit the Vatican Museums every year. Choose an off-peak time to visit, such as very early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Consider visiting during the week rather than the weekend, for example.

Make sure you’re fed and watered

It can take a few hours to get through the Vatican Museums, so don’t go on an empty stomach! Also, there are bathrooms and washing facilities at the reception so take advantage before your journey begins. And carry a bottle of water with you!

No talking or photography in the Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is a wondrous feat, and you will be able to feast your eyes on its magnificent work by Michelangelo, that took him four years to paint! Your breath will be taken away; however, you are strictly not allowed to talk as this is shown as a sign of disrespect. You’re also not allowed to take photographs as light pollution from the flashes can be harmful to the artwork. There are always several guards to enforce these rules.

View from the Dome

We highly recommend that you climb to the top of the Cupola as you will witness one of the most beautiful views of the city of Rome from above, with the Colosseum clearly visible, as well as the many other characteristics that the city has to offer. There are 551 steps, however, you can always take the elevator and skip the first 320 steps!
