Giuseppe Sanmartino miraculously created this sculpture with the illusion of a transparent veil, which as legend had it, was created by an experimental technique that chemically transformed a real veil into transparent marble! We know this not to be true, however intriguing… The details are so precise, that through the veil you can see the face of Jesus, and the scars left by his torture.

Although Cristo Velato is the highlight of the Sansevero Chapel, the chapel also contains numerous other paintings and sculptures. One of the most fascinating is the Anatomical Machines; skeletons of a man and a woman, upright in position, of which you can see in high-detail their circulatory systems.
