Perhaps the most incredible sculpture Of all time?
Certainly the only time I have been touched by a sense of alchemy - could this really have been sculpted by human hand?
It is an almost unreal representation of Veiled Christ, a life-sized statue laid at the center of the nave of the Sansevero Chapel in Naples. This 1753 sculpture, by Giuseppe Sanmartino, from a single block of marble represents Christ, covered with a transparent veil and lying lifeless on a bed. Goosebumps, no-words, stand and stare - get lost in emotion and utter disbelief.
The sculpture was commissioned by Raimondo di Sangro, the Prince of San Sever who was very fond of the arts. Originally the commission was awarded to Antonio Corradini, but after creating a draft terracotta, he passed away before having time to embark on this piece. The commission was passed to Giuseppe Sanmartino who disregarded his predecessor’s idea.
